Autumn is here (it IS admit it!) and it’s time to look to the new season and see what it offers us in terms of trends. Of course, we don’t really want to think of winter yet either but autumn does offer us plenty to be excited about, including coats in a massive range of colours, a beautiful flirtation with lace and a dip into the 80’s (in a good way). Here is all you need to know:
And They Call It ‘Fluffy Love’
Warm, fluffy, furry and fuzzy are must haves for autumn. Think curly sheep gilets (in multi colours), shearling collars and lined furry shoes. It doesn’t really matter which faux fur (or fuzz) you opt for, you just need to make sure it’s colourful and tactile, people have to want to reach out and stroke you! (not sure if that’s selling it or not?).
Blame Balmain who showed a collection with puffball sleeves, retro waist belts, ruffles and power shoulders, single-handily bringing the 80’s back. He wasn’t without accomplices though – both Christopher Kane and J.W. Anderson have declared that lurex (in jewel tones) will be the fabric of the party season, as we inch into Christmas.
Bringing Boho Back (Again)
If, like us, you thought that Boho ended when Sienna Miller grew up, you might be surprised to learn that a new generation of fashionistas are donning ponchos and floating skirts. This season it’s gone a bit more folk inspired, with Burberry and Valentino going wild with prints and fringing.
EVERYONE agrees that the colour of autumn WILL be red but it’s taking the fashion camps longer to agree on the tone! There are valid arguments for fire engine, ketchup, rose and ruby, so don whatever takes your fancy and worry not.
OK, I have to admit, this one has me rather giddy. Not because I’m into gothic fashion but because I adore lace. I would love to own lace as my statement and wear it everyday but I’ve never seen a versatile way to do so (bar undies!) until now. Moody lace (shades of grey and black) are big, with ruffled collars and puff sleeves. Thank you!
This look is probably the most versatile for autumn because it’s accessible to most. Think old school, retro, Varsity geek chic. Vintage American football jackets, ‘head girl’ badges, brogues, wide rim glasses and berets.
It wouldn’t be autumn without a splash of check, and this season doesn’t disappoint with dogtooth and tartan. The originality of this season comes in the fact that colours are mixed up to include pink on pink checks.
Which one of these trends gets you most excited for cooler temps?
