Top Tips to Chill Out when Flying

Are you scared of flying? I am not sure if I am in fear of flying or just very uncomfortable with it, but my holiday literally starts when the plane lands. You won’t see me kissing the runway, but believe me; I am not far off. I never used to suffer from Aviophobia, but after a very turbulent flight from the Caribbean, while five months pregnant, flying has never been quite the same for me.

The symptoms of a phobia can be extremely unpleasant, palpitations, dizziness, sweating, struggling to breathe, not the greatest way to start a family vacation.

Flying is one still one of the safest ways to travel, but if you are still nervous, here’s a few ways to chill out on the flight.

Top Tips for Aviophobia

1. Pre-book your seats, believe me, it’s worth the extra money. Turbulence is felt more at the back of the plane, so book your seats towards the front of the aircraft. Don’t forget to book your return journey too.

2. Keep hydrated, swap the coffee for bottled water. Caffeine can make you feel more anxious. That said, a small glass of Chablis once airborne can help you relax a little and get you into the holiday spirit.

3. If you do feel anxious, controlling your breathing certainly helps. Breathe slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth.

4. Distract yourself from negative thoughts with a book, watch the in-flight movie or download a few podcasts to listen to on your journey. Charge up those noise cancelling headphones and download your a couple of your favourite films onto your iphone.

5. Remind yourself of why you are flying in the first place. Once you land, you will be on your dream holiday.

6. Stay cool. Planes can get very hot, I always have a supply of Kool’n’Soothe cool strips to get me through the journey, I did once wear them on my forehead, but to be honest, it does look a little weird. They are just as effective (and much more discreet) worn on your wrists.
