Does Meditation Actually Work?

There is a lot of hype in the media about the positive effects of meditation. It seems like every celebrity, entrepreneur or break away resort is preaching the benefits and how life-changing meditation is. We have Universe exploring Guru’s on every spiritual cloud-corner, luring us in with promises of mental freedom, and the ability to unleash your thoughts into a stress-free internal environment that is your mind. So, is meditation real, or just a spiritual money maker?

This depends mainly on your ability to relax, whether you believe it actually works or not, and how susceptible you are towards meditation. Also, meditation is also subjective, having a life-changing effect on some, while others just benefit from taking time out to relax and escape from the everyday stresses of life. So, what’s my opinion? I believe it does work.

Meditation Scientific Research

I meditate every morning and find it sets me up for the day. I feel more focused, relaxed and ready to start the day. Having recently taken a course in Transcendental Meditation, I have read the book ‘Becoming Supernatural’ by Dr. Joe Dispenza, which I highly recommend reading if you are skeptical about meditation. Dr. Joe Dispenza provides scientific evidence of the effectiveness of meditation by carrying out scientific research, workshops, and studies to support his theories.

However, I would say that what you get out of it, is what you put into it. What I mean by this is, you have to be consistent with your meditation; this means meditating daily. At first, you may find it difficult to focus and quiet your mind, as all the stresses of life will want to take advantage of this quiet time you have created for yourself, e.g., what’s happening at work, what have you got to do next week, etc.

So, persistence is key, it may take you weeks or months to master the art of meditation, but if you can persevere the benefits are life-changing. The ability to escape the mental stresses of everyday life caused by negative thoughts and past experiences, and replacing them with positive thoughts of a better future life for yourself can only be a good thing.

So how do you find out about meditation and which type of meditation will suit you? There are many different types of ways you can meditate; you may want to go to a class with other people. Other options are private tuition, or simply spend some quality time on your own. My top tip would be to read the book I have suggested in this article and go from there.
